Quickly shooting up the coaching ranks, Timmy Chang has been at the helm of his former alma mater, the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, for the last two seasons.
While his return as a coach hasn’t been as triumphant as when he was a player, with an 8-18 record so far, the school’s career leader in passing yards (17,072) and two-time Hawaii Bowl MVP (2003, 2004) has time to turn it around. What is Chang’s salary, contract, and net worth as the Rainbow Warriors’ coach?
Timmy Chang’s Salary and Contract in 2024
Chang signed a four-year contract with Hawaii in 2022, with a fifth-year option that would have been automatically triggered had the Rainbow Warriors made a bowl game in either of his first two seasons. That didn’t happen, so his deal is set to expire after the 2025 season. His salary for the 2024 college football campaign is $700,008, an increase of over $100,000 vs. 2023.
Over the course of the four-year deal, Chang is set to make $2,550,030 in base salary before bonuses. He is the lowest-paid head coach in the Mountain West Conference.
- $500,010 in 2022
- $600,006 in 2023
- $700,008 in 2024
- $750,006 in 2025
- Total: $2,550,030
He was hired in place of Todd Graham, who resigned, leaving on his own, meaning Hawaii didn’t owe him a termination buyout. Graham was making $800,000 a year when he left, significantly higher than Chang’s current salary.
Chang could more than double his salary by achieving a litany of incentive-based bonuses written into his contract. So far, Chang hasn’t activated any of the bonuses.

A buyout was also agreed upon in the deal, with Chang agreeing to pay $900,000 if he terminated the contract after one year, $700,000 after the second year, $450,000 after the third, and $300,000 after the fourth.
If Hawaii terminates the deal before the term expires, Chang would be owed $450,000 for every year left on the deal.
Chang’s Net Worth
While currently on a deal worth over $2.5 million, Chang made an additional $550,013 as a receivers coach at Nevada the four years prior — $134,350 (2017), $106,090 (2018), $119,573 (2019), and $190,000 (2020).
He’s relatively young in the coaching world (42), so a net worth of over $3 million to start isn’t too bad.
