The East Carolina Pirates added more firepower to their 2024 roster as they were able to bring in some fireworks this offseason. Former Florida State Seminoles wide receiver Winston Wright joins the Pirates through the transfer portal in a move that pushes their class near the top of the AAC portal rankings.
Wright announced X last week, saying he has committed to playing for the Pirates. Going into the 2024 season, Wright will have one more year of eligibility remaining.
ECU Adds Winston Wright Through the Transfer Portal
Wright spent the past two seasons with the Seminoles, seeing limited action with four receptions for 36 yards during the regular season. He decided to leave the team after the Virginia Tech game in October.
His college career began at West Virginia, where he combined to record 129 catches for 1,338 yards and seven touchdowns in three seasons. Wright transferred to Florida State starting in 2022, but injuries sustained in a car accident kept him out for the whole season.
MORE: Winston Wright As Elusive As Ever
ECU brings in the highly talented wide receiver as the team looks to reload its roster after losing 23 players to the transfer portal. The good news is they have already brought in six players from the transfer portal with no signs of the team stopping.
Here are the six players they have brought in as of December 26, 2023:
- Katin Houser, QB (Previous School: Michigan State)
- Winston Wright, WR (Previous School: Florida State)
- Anthony Smith, WR (Previous School: NC State)
- Darius Bell, OT (Previous School: Maine)
- Ryheem Craig, EDGE (Previous School: Louisville)
- Dameon Wilson, LB (Previous School: Missouri)
ECU’s Passing Game Receives Major Boost Through Transfers
The good news for East Carolina is just two wide receivers entered the transfer portal with their leading receiver freshman Chase Sowell, who will be back next season. Adding Anthony Smith and Wright to the picture will enhance the passing game for ECU, especially with Michigan State quarterback Katin Houser joining the program.
ECU still has some work to do to replace the 23 players who have already left the program, but the talent that has been brought in is a good start for the Pirates.
