The Boise State Broncos have a new reason to take down its opening for head football coach.
Even with past blue turf legend Chris Petersen watching from the broadcast booth wearing a BSU polo for the 2023 Mountain West Conference title game, the Broncos have appeared to found their guy moving forward after Andy Avalos. And it’s not “Coach Pete.”
It’s the interim head coach who just spearheaded a three-game winning streak — culminating in bottling the conference’s best-scoring offense with the MWC championship on the line. Spencer Danielson is now the winning head coach of the MWC title game, and many believe he’s the guy moving forward.
Fans State Case for Spencer Danielson as Boise State Head Coach
Danielson, who once coached linebackers for the now-defunct Azusa Pacific football program, put on a defensive clinic in the entertainment capital of the world.
His Broncos forced three turnovers and bottled an offense that was averaging 35.5 points per game to just 20 points, leading to Boise State’s 44-20 romp to recapture the MWC crown.
In the process, Danielson has backers of the Boise blue, believing he’s the head coach moving forward for the Broncos. One of them is the title game’s defensive Most Valuable Player Alexander Teubner.
“Stop the search right now. We’ve got our guy,” Teubner said loud and clear after the win.

Local media around the Broncos are believing Danielson is the guy moving forward. Kole Emplit of KMVT 11 in Twin Falls believes in BSU pivoting to the former NCAA Division II defensive coach.
“Can’t imagine Boise State doesn’t make Spencer Danielson permanent,” Emplit said on X.
Other fans let it be known on social media that they’re “all in” on Danielson taking over the Broncos. Others instantly said Danielson “deserves the full-time job.” One more fan noticed the effect Danielson has on his team.
“He’s just different. Gets these guys fried up and they’ve played amazing under him, most importantly the players seem to love playing for him,” the fan said.
How Danielson’s Defense Rattled High-Scoring UNLV Offense
Again, Danielson faced a tall order in soaking up the MWC title game as the interim head coach — from dealing with an offensive juggernaut to hearing the chatter about BSU’s head coaching future.
But all Danielson did was get his defense to put on a show in a city that loves entertainment.
Boise State didn’t allow more than three points in the final two quarters. They forced talented true freshman Jayden Maiava to lose the ball three times, two times on interceptions. The Broncos didn’t even allow a single 100-yard performer.
That included 1,300-yard wide receiver Ricky White, who was kept out of the end zone and limited to 86 yards. Furthermore, BSU prevented an offense known for exotic two to three-back looks in the backfield to just 2.9 yards per carry on the ground.
Lastly, BSU made one more significant accomplishment under Danielson that the Broncos’ MWC peers couldn’t do: hold this UNLV offense to 20 points. Boise State, under the man called to take over for the fired Avalos, handed the Rebs their lowest-scoring output in conference play for 2023.
Speaking of Avalos, someone from his family tree spoke on behalf of his son before the game.
Andy Avalos’ Father Speaks Before MWC Title Game
Danielson and the Broncos had one more distraction. This time a Facebook post from Phillip Avalos, the father of the fired HC.
Posted by Ron Counts of the Idaho Statesman, Avalos referred to the Broncos as his son’s team…not Danielson’s.
But now, Danielson led BSU to a 3-0 march together when they faced bowl elimination. In the process, the school may now need to shut down any more job interviews for the head coaching position, as Danielson has officially just positioned himself as the school’s eighth head coach in program history.
