While unsurprising on the surface, Mississippi State Bulldogs QB and SEC record holder Will Rogers will reportedly test the open waters ahead of the transfer portal window that officially opens in December. Rogers enters the transfer portal just hours after finishing a disappointing final season in Starkville.
Will Rogers Reportedly Enters Transfer Portal
Rogers played in just nine games for Mississippi State in 2023 as injuries and an inept defense marred the Bulldogs’ campaign this fall.
Still, Rogers should be a coveted transfer portal quarterback for a team that needs a veteran leader and a proven passer. Rogers has thrown for 12,315 career passing yards and 94 career passing touchdowns.
His 12,315 career passing yards ranks Rogers 39th all-time. Rogers ranks 43rd all-time with his 94 passing touchdowns.
Rogers isn’t just etched in the all-time record books, he also owns multiple places on the SEC leaderboard, both for single-season records and career marks.
In 2021, Rogers completed 505 passes, setting the new SEC single-season completions record in the process. His 1,301 career completions are also an SEC record.
Rogers threw for 36 touchdowns in 2022 and 35 touchdowns in 2021, both of which are the top two single-season touchdown marks in Mississippi State history.
Rogers’ recent tape wouldn’t necessarily generate a ton of interest in the portal, however, his track record and proven ability to not only manage a game but hit every level of the field with his arm certainly will give him a boost.
He’s the first of a potential storm of veteran quarterbacks ready to hit the portal and find greener pastures. Rogers is a grad-transfer and will be immediately eligible to play at his next institution.
While the official open date of the portal for the fall window isn’t until December 4, Rogers can start his search earlier after Mississippi State fired head coach Zach Arnett just a week ago. Athletes from schools that fired their head coach are given a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal regardless of the time of year.
