The 2024 WNBA champion and former New York Liberty coach, Sandy Brondello, has finally found a new team to coach for next year. On Wednesday, Oct. 22, @trendyhoopstars on X/Twitter reported that coach Brondello has verbally agreed to coach the 2026 WNBA expansion team, Toronto Tempo.
This comes after Brondello was dropped out of nowhere by the Liberty franchise in late September. The reasoning for her sacking may stem from the fact that New York’s championship defense was thwarted by coach Nate Tibbetts’ Phoenix Mercury in the first round of the playoffs, losing their best-of-three series 2-1.

Women’s basketball fans reacted to the latest development, as they wanted coach Brondello to join Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings or the Indiana Fever.
“I badly wanted her to get Paige,” one fan captioned.
“Imagine choosing to coach an expansion team in Canada instead of going to Dallas and coaching Paige…🤣 I needed that laugh today,” another fan wrote with a laughing emoji.
“Would rather go to another country than Coach miss 10-34 🤣🤣,” another user said with a couple of laughing emojis, alluding to Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky.
“Congratulations. But, I was hoping she would go to Indiana Fever,” a fan shared.
Other users were just delighted to see a coach of Brondello’s stature finally find a new team after her sudden dismissal from the Liberty franchise.
“In my honest opinion, that was a no-brainer. She’s already a HOF’r in Australia and, a shoo-in future HOF’r in the USA,” one fan claimed.
“Huge dub for Toronto. Tempo won’t be your typical expansion squad,” another fan exclaimed.
“Great news! Coach Brondello will bring that championship pedigree to a new expansion team of the W,” a fan posted.
An official announcement will be made in the coming days, as Brondello and the Tempo management are working on the schematics of her contract. For the Liberty franchise that rosters stars such as Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart, they are still searching for a replacement for Brondello. They finished the 2025 campaign with an overall record of 27-17.

Paige Bueckers And The Dallas Wings Have Yet To Find A New Head Coach
Despite multiple calls from fans on social media, Sandy Brondello did not become the main shot-caller for Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings in the WNBA.
The Wings franchise also recently let go of their tactician, Chris Koclanes, after the team finished with a lackluster 10-34 record in the 2025 season, and onlookers wanted a star like Bueckers to be under the tutelage of a champion coach like Brondello.
