With the college football season entering Week 9, another notable firing took place with Florida choosing to part ways with head coach Billy Napier following the team’s underwhelming 3-4 start to the season. The firing follows James Franklin’s firing from Penn State the week before after the Nittany Lions dropped three straight games.
This makes two big college football programs without a permanent head coach for the time being. This begs a question on which program is more lucrative for a potential head coach candidate.
Appearing on ESPN’s College Football Show, analyst Paul Finebaum called Florida the more desirable destination for elite coaches, and even suggested Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin could be in play.
“I think Florida is easily the best choice,” Finebaum said. “Florida can win national championships, Greeny. They’ve done it three times really since the ’90s — one with Spurrier, two with Urban Meyer. You have to go back to yesteryear for Penn State, really back to the ’80s. Penn State’s a very good job; Florida is better. And keep your eyes on Lane Kiffin for the Florida job.”
Lane Kiffin has led Ole Miss to a strong start this season. They are fourth in the SEC with 6-1 overall record and 3-1 in the conference. Their only loss came last week against the Georgia Bulldogs. Following a strong start, rumors are being raised if Kiffin could leave Ole Miss for better opportunity elsewhere like Florida or Penn State.

How Much Ole Miss Will Be Owed if Lane Kiffin Decides To Leave
With Paul Finebaum throwing Lane Kiffin in the pool of potential candidates for the head coach role at Florida, let’s see what are the Ole Miss head coach’s buyout details.
Kiffin is signed till the 2029 season on a contract that pays him around $9 million per year, excluding incentives. If Ole Miss fires Kiffin without cause, they will owe the head coach around $36.59 million.
If the reverse happens and Kiffin decides to leave Ole Miss in 2025, he will owe the program $3 million. If he leaves after next season, the amount drops to $1.5 million. The contract contains an automatic one-year extension clause if Ole Miss wins at least seven regular-season games.
As such it doesn’t appear that Lane Kiffin is thinking about leaving the Rebels just yet.
