“She’s Always Been Reluctant to be a Leader”: Kim Mulkey Makes Feelings Clear About Flau’jae Johnson’s Role in LSU

In over 40 years of her coaching career, Kim Mulkey has mentored some of the most talented college basketball players. With over 21 years at Baylor, Mulkey took the basketball program to new heights.

In 2021, she took over the LSU Tigers. Mulkey brought glory days to LSU as well. She won the national championship with them in 2023. Even at LSU, she has transformed the lives of multiple players, such as Angel Reese, Aneesah Morrow, and Flau’jae Johnson.

All these players have credited coach Mulkey for their growth. As Reese is making it big in the WNBA after winning the national championship, the next big star from LSU might just be Flau’jae. Apart from her basketball talent, Flau’jae has also made fans with her rapping skills. Kim Mulkey has always said good things about her. Flau’jae will be playing her senior and final year in college, and Mulkey has made it clear what she wants from the 21-year-old.

When asked about the next step for Flau’jae Johnson, Mulkey said “leadership.”

“I think Flau’jae, she leads by what she does with her music. But I think she’s always been reluctant to be a leader of teammates because she wants them to like her. She never felt comfortable doing it because she always had the great older player in that locker room. And now you are that older player. You’re the senior. You’ve been here. You know the ropes. So go lead your basketball team,” Mulkey sent a message to Flau’jae (1:35).

    Flau’jae Johnson And LSU’s 2024-25 season

LSU won its first 20 games, all in amazing fashion. They were dominant and commanding. Flau’jae led the Tigers in most games with her performances. Aneesah Morrow also brought out performances worthy of a senior. She took charge of the team and was brilliant in most games. Another player that shone brightly was Mikaylah Williams.

Mulkey’s first loss last season came against Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks. They lost 66-56 after a 20-game winning streak. Although they won most of their games, LSU did take a hit on its form in the business end of the season. They lost just four games in the season, which was still impressive. Come post-season, LSU walked past opponents like butter on a knife. However, UCLA overpowered them in the Elite Eight, winning 72-65.

Now with the addition of MiLaysia Fulwiley, Bella Hines, and Kate Koval, LSU seems a strong unit, with Flau’jae Johnson and Mikaylah Williams in leadership roles. Can Flau’jae Johnson lead LSU to another national championship?
