“Jimmy Sexton Fleeced Florida State”: Josh Pate Brings Up Mike Norvell’s Alabama Rumors As Reason Behind Massive $58,700,000 Contract Buyout

After losing to Pittsburgh on Saturday, Florida State Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell is under fire after losing his third game in a row. This was in contrast to how the team started the season with an upset win over Alabama and getting a 3-0 start.

This latest loss had many analysts talking, including Josh Pate, who noted in his “Josh Pate’s College Football Show” that Norvell’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, teased that the coach could be trying to get a job at Alabama and even got a new buyout structure placed in his contract.

“Do you know that Mike Norvell has six losing streaks of at least 3 games in his time in Tallahassee?” Pate asked. (0:24)

“Six, that’s half a dozen, according to stats and info. So Jimmy Sexton, as he is known to do, fleeced Florida State this last coaching cycle when he let it be known that Mike Norvell could be headed to Alabama and got a new buyout structure put in place and so now, I mean, I don’t think they can afford to buy him out. It’s $59 million if they want to fire him. FSU fell for it,” he added.

Per CBS Sports, Norvell’s contract is worth over $10 million per year, with his buyout being 85% of his remaining contract, which was supposed to last from 2025 until 2031, with the buyout possibly being paid in full or in monthly installments until the 2031 season.

His firing could create even more problems for the sliding Seminoles, as many of his high school recruits could decommit and take their talents somewhere else. It would also initiate a search for his replacement, which could be hard to do. With his contract not ending in over five years, it should be noted that it could be around $58,700,000.

Mike Norvell Addresses Angry Florida State Fans After Upset Loss

After their red-hot start against non-conference teams, Mike Norvell’s Seminoles are now 0-3 against fellow ACC teams, with Florida State now having a 3-3 overall record. This has led many fans to call for his firing despite the massive buyout the school has to pay.

In a statement after the loss, the Seminoles head coach addressed the angry fans and agreed with them about their frustrations.

“You should be frustrated with the results. We lost three straight games. I’m frustrated with the results. Ultimately we got to get it fixed. We got to go make it better and show the potential of what this team is, you know, on a consistent basis,” he said.

Florida State still has a big chance to bounce back next week, as they take on Stanford and finally end their 3-game skid.
