Tammy Wilson is the emotional backbone of Russell Wilson’s family. She worked as an emergency room nurse before taking on leadership roles in patient care and outreach. Her compassion, work ethic, and strength were essential to Russell’s upbringing.
Tammy balanced long hours in healthcare with raising three children, making sure they excelled both academically and athletically.
“My mom is in Seattle right now and she’s helping build, basically these portable hospitals in a way, in and around the community in Seattle so people can check for coronavirus and everything else,” Wilson said while speaking with NBC Sports’ Mike Tirico on his Lunch Talk Live show.
Tammy’s strength became even more visible after Harrison’s passing in 2010. She helped Russell navigate grief while encouraging him to continue chasing his dreams. In 2019, Russell surprised her by gifting her a house on Mother’s Day.
Who is Russell Wilson’s Dad?
Harrison Benjamin Wilson III was the foundation of Russell’s competitive spirit. A talented multi-sport athlete himself, Harrison played football and baseball at Dartmouth College before earning a law degree from the University of Virginia.
His passion for both academics and athletics helped shape Russell’s mindset from an early age.
“My dad, when I was young, he always inspired me,” Russell told ESPN while remembering him. “He used to always ask me the question, ‘Son, why not you? Why don’t you play pro baseball? Why don’t you play pro football?’”
“The idea of ‘Why not you?’ was really at the center of who I was. I started really subconsciously and consciously asking myself that question,” he added.
Harrison encouraged his son to dream boldly and back those dreams with effort. He was known for his phrase, “Why not you?” In his final years, Harrison battled complications from diabetes. Despite his health challenges, he remained deeply involved in Russell’s life, offering constant encouragement and advice.
When Harrison passed away in 2010, Russell was in college, preparing for the NFL journey that his father had helped him envision. The lessons Harrison taught, discipline, education, and belief, remain at the heart of Wilson’s identity as both an athlete and a man.
