Miami Dolphins Coaching Rumors: Could John Harbaugh or Rex Ryan Replace Mike McDaniel Next Season?

The Miami Dolphins are not off to the start to their season that they hoped. Despite entering the season with playoff hopes, the team has lost four of its first five games. As a result, head coach Mike McDaniel could be on the hot seat.

On Wednesday, a new episode of “Dolphins Today by Chat Sports” was released. On the episode, host Nic Rohloff spoke about two possible replacements for the Dolphins’ head coach.

“Mike McDaniel, we want him gone, but who’s going to replace him? I have two potential replacement for Mike McDaniel on today’s show based off some rumors created by yours truly, but also rumors that are out there from a potential NFL insider,” Nic Rohloff said (Timestamp 0:10).

“Now, I want to make this clear, this would not be replacements for this season. Who are those two replacements? The current head coach for the Baltimore Ravens John Harbaugh, and former Jets and Bills head coach, but current ESPN analyst, Rex Ryan.”

Will Mike McDaniel Be the Head Coach for the Miami Dolphins Next Season?

Mike McDaniel had a strong start to his career in Miami in 2022, leading the team to an appearance in the playoffs despite injury struggles from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. They then reached the playoffs again in 2023, winning 11 games. However, the team regressed in 2024 following another injury to Tagovailoa. Now, they appear to be headed to another playoff miss in 2025.

If Dolphins management believes that McDaniel is not doing enough to help the team win despite its history of injury woes, he could be fired. If that is the case, John Harbaugh and Rex Ryan would both be interesting replacements.

Despite being the head coach of the Ravens since 2008, John Harbaugh is another head coach who could be on the hot seat to start the season. The Ravens are 1-4 to start the season despite starting the season as Super Bowl contenders. While the injury to star QB Lamar Jackson has contributed, the team’s struggles began while Jackson was still playing. If the Ravens decide to part ways with Harbaugh, he will likely be a highly sought-after head coach.

Rex Ryan would be an interesting pick, having not coached since 2016. While he has not had much success as a head coach, he helped the Baltimore Ravens win a Super Bowl in 2000.
