After years of being regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, Russell Wilson was benched by the New York Giants in favor of rookie Jaxson Dart. Wilson has struggled in some of the games he started with the Giants, and this has led Giants head coach Brian Daboll to make the switch.
While not many agreed to Wilson getting benched, ESPN analyst and former NFL star Marcus Spears was all praises for Dart and believes that he will be great. This was revealed when TMZ caught up with him and was asked about the Giants and Dart. He was then asked if Wilson should retire, and he did not hold back:
“Yeah, Russell gotta go!” Spears told TMZ.

Russell Wilson, who led the Seattle Seahawks to their first and only Super Bowl title, had been disappointing in his first three starts with the Giants, with the team going 3-0 with him as the starter. However, after the switch, the Giants finally won their first game of the season against the LA Chargers. Dart still started against the New Orleans Saints but failed to capture the victory, though at 1-1, he still has a better record than Wilson at 3-0.
The Giants offense barely got going against the Saints, with the team turning the ball over for five straight possessions. Dart himself was 26-of-40 passing for 202 yards with 2 touchdown passes and 2 interceptions, but the team struggled overall against New Orleans.
Russell Wilson Says He Is Not Yet Done
Despite peers like Marcus Spears telling him that he should hang up his boots already, Russell Wilson is not ready to call it quits just yet. Soon after his benching in that win over the Chargers, the former Super Bowl champion told reporters that he was not done yet.
“For me personally, I’m not done. I’ve got so much belief in myself and I know what I’m capable of. I know I can help this football team if that comes up.” he said during a press conference.

Even as a backup, Wilson still has plenty of chances to prove that he is not yet done on the field, as this is still early in the 2025 season.
