Spencer Shrader Injury Update: What Happened to the Colts Kicker During Game vs Raiders?

Spencer Shrader suffered a serious leg injury during the Week 5 game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. The injury to the kicker occurred in the second quarter during an extra-point attempt.

Raiders safety Tristin McCollum collided with Shrader’s right knee, leading to Shrader falling and clutching his leg. The immediate aftermath saw Shrader unable to put weight on his knee, as he had to be assisted off the field. Later, it was reported that the kicker would not be available for the remainder of the game.

In Shrader’s absence, punter Rigoberto Sánchez took over the kicking duties for the game.  The Colts were noted to avoid going for the extra-point attempts and were instead relying on two-point conversions after Shrader’s exit.

With six minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Colts are well ahead in the game (26-3). They exploded for 20 points in the second quarter. Before exiting the game, Shrader kicked well for two points.

Spencer Shrader Honored as AFC Special Teams Player of the Month

Spencer Shrader is turning heads as a kicker in his second NFL season. For his performance in September, Shrader was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month. The kicker made 13 of 14 field goal attempts and all 12 extra points. He leads the NFL with 51 points.

Shrader has contributed well to the Colts’ 3-1 start, their best since 2009. This includes an impressive 45-yard field goal in the Week 2 game-winning moment against the Denver Broncos.

In his collegiate career, Spencer Shrader played four years for South Florida before transferring to Notre Dame in 2023. In his final season for the Fighting Irish, Shrader went 15 for 22 on his field goal attempts with a career-long 54 yards. He was 61 for his 62 on his extra point attempts.

As an undrafted free agent, the Colts signed him in April 2024. This followed a series of waivers and re-sign moves. His game-winning field goal (last November) for the Kansas Chiefs against the Carolina Panthers remains a big moment in his career. He was re-signed by the Colts in March.
