“Learned A Awful Lot”: Bill Belichick Makes Feelings Very Clear On Relationship With Coach Saban Ahead of Clemson Matchup

As Bill Belichick stood on the field before the kickoff, while Nick Saban was working the College GameDay coverage, he was asked to share a story from their early days together climbing the coaching ladder.

“Well, I learned an awful lot from Coach Saban,” Belichick began (0:17).

“We came from different defensive systems, and we merged them together in Cleveland” , He added (0:20)

The Cleveland years were formative for both men. Belichick coached the Browns from 1991-1995, and Saban was a defensive coordinator from 1991 to 1994.

Belichick also recounted how Saban had introduced him to some concepts he hadn’t delved into during his time with the New York Giants. For instance, the man-to-man coverage became a part of their defensive philosophy, which was not something the Giants relied on very often. Also, the 4-3 defensive front that Saban had refined at Michigan State also became an integral part of their play.

But it wasn’t just the technical side that sat with Belichick; it was profoundly refreshing to see Saban teach free agents, recruit, and figure out how to build a dynasty at Alabama, which was really impressive.

“It was a great experience watching Nick handle the free agents and recruit and build a program at Alabama,” Belichick said (0:36)

“I’m very grateful for the relationship that I have with him and all the things that I’ve learned from him. He’s the best that’s ever done it”, he further elaborated (0:43)

Belichick further said it was a real honor to have spent those four years with him, building a relationship and friendship that he believed would last nearly a lifetime in his career.

High Stakes In The Clemson vs. North Carolina Game

For Belichick, it’s been a season for a learning experience of its own at North Carolina. The Tar Heels are 2-2 with no Power conference wins as they continue to adjust to their identity under his leadership. Quarterback Gio Lopez has started every game, but suffered from injuries have caused 6th-year senior Max Johnson to play multiple times. The passing offense has lagged and is ranked 17th in the ACC and 124th in the NCAA.

The match-up against Clemson represented an important time in both programs. The Tigers are 1-3 and just lost at home to Syracuse. It’s fair to say that neither of these teams is at the record they had expected to be in early October, making this game feel like a must-win encounter.
