The controversy surrounding late LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy received a new update, where his attorney discloses details that make the initial investigation questionable.
Lacy, who is ruled to have committed suicide following a police pursuit, was booked on several charges, including negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run, and reckless operation of a vehicle. This comes after he was implicated in triggering a chain reaction crash that led to the death of 78-year-old Herman Hall on Louisiana Highway 20 on Dec. 17. Louisiana State Police stated that Lacy drove unsafely in a no-passing zone and then left the site without calling in the accident.
Lacy’s attorney, Matt Ory, questioned key elements of the case. From the surveillance video, the attorney said that Lacy’s car was approximately 72.6 yards behind the crash when the accident occurred. With this, Ory said Lacy cannot be blamed for the accident and that his alleged rash driving wasn’t the reason behind the accident.
Ory didn’t stop there. He also asserts that the investigation leaves several questions. He pointed out that the passenger who was in Lacy’s vehicle was allegedly not interviewed. Moreover, he also questioned why the state trooper’s body camera was turned off while the accident report was being prepared. Through all this points, Ory suggests that the investigation was not conducted properly and had it happen Lacy would have been found innocent.
How And When Did Kyren Lacy Die?
Kyren Lacy was scheduled to appear before a grand jury two days before he died on April 12 at the age of 24. According to People, in a reported family dispute, the LSU wide receiver discharged a firearm into the ground, leading to a “weapons disturbance” call.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, deputies attempted to pull over Lacy, but he fled the scene, which was followed by a chase by the police in Houston. The chase went down in a crash after which it was found that Lacy might have shot himself with a handgun that was recovered from his vehicle.
In the wake of Kyren Lacy’s death, head coach Brian Kelly described Lacy as “a bright star,” as he lamented his death.
“Kyren was a bright star,” Kelly said. “He had an incredible personality. He had a love for the game, a love for being a Tiger and was a guy that played with great emotion. When you think of Kyren, you’re gonna smile most of the time because of the way he handled himself.”
It remains to be seen if the points raised by Matthew Ory are enough to reopen the investigation.
