Hulu premiered its football sports comedy Chad Powers this week. Starring Top Gun: Maverick’s Glen Powell as the titular Chad Powers, or should we say Russ Holiday, the show follows a former disgraced Oregon quarterback becoming a walk-on at the fictional South Georgia Catfish in an attempt to rebuild his career. The gist of the show consists of Holiday pulling a Mrs Doubtfire, and creating the fictional alter ego of “Chad Powers” to be able to join the program under the guise of being a hillbilly player who has never played at the collegiate level.

Holiday is forced to do this because he literally fumbled his career at Oregon. In the fourth quarter of a Rose Bowl national championship game against Georgia, the quarterback dropped the ball mere inches away from scoring a decisive touchdown due to an early celebration. The ball was returned by Georgia’s defense all the way to the Ducks’ endzone, sealing the fictional encounter.
Adding insult to injury, Holiday ignored a cancer-suffering kid who attempted to offer him support on the sidelines and ended up in a physical altercation with the father of the kid.
Fans of real-life football were quick to jump on social media to joke about how things never seem to go properly for Oregon, not even in fiction.
“Oregon can’t even win a national championship on TV” Joked one fan
“Just watched the opening scene of Chad Powers on Hulu. The Ducks can’t even win a Natty in a fictional television show 😂” Said someone else
Hulu set the atmosphere from the start, getting Kirk Herbstreit and Chris Fowler to do cameos in the first scene of the show. Stephen A. Smith even made a brief appearance later on. However, some fans thought it wasn’t an accurate portrayal.
“If this were realistic Kirk would have immediately been like “well let’s go back frame for frame because I’m sure Georgia would have had to committed a penalty somewhere in there” ” Claimed one fan
Other fans thought that the show didn’t nail the portrayal of the sport.
“This is why I can’t watch football movies/shows. Bunch of unathletic dweebs. Miracle on Ice had the right formula. Go find athletes that play the sport and have them act. Flawless movie” Commented someone else
Was Georgia’s portrayal accurate?
“Kirby gonna be pissed with that tackling” Said another person
Is “Chad Powers” predicting the future?
“Will life imitate art this season? I’d say there’s a decent chance!” Joked someone else
