The Arizona Cardinals have not had a perfect start to their season. After defeating the New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers to start the year, they dropped games to the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. While the team does not have a perfect roster, injuries have also been an issue for them.
The team’s starting running back, James Conner, suffered a season-ending foot injury in the team’s Week 3 loss to the 49ers. As a result, Trey Benson was elevated to the starting role in Week 4. However, the injuries continued to pile up for the Cardinals as Benson suffered a knee injury, according to a report from insider Adam Schefter.
“Cardinals RB Trey Benson is being placed on injured reserve due to his knee injury,” Adam Schefter wrote.

Benson had eight carries for 35 yards against Seattle in Week 4. Additionally, he had five receptions for 19 yards. However, he will now be out, and as a result, head coach Jonathan Gannon will need to test his running back depth. Here is a look at his options ahead of the team’s Week 5 matchup against Tennessee.
Arizona Cardinals Running Back Depth Chart Ahead of Week 5
At the start of the year, the Arizona Cardinals appeared to be well set up at the running back position. James Conner was a veteran RB coming off back-to-back 1000+ yard seasons. However, his injury put Trey Benson into the starting role. Now that even he is injured, the team will have to rely on much less experienced players.
With both Conner and Benson out, the Cardinals will likely turn to Emari Demercado as their starting running back. The third-year player has appeared in all four games this season, but he has only made four carries for eight yards. Despite his limited experience, he is the team’s third-stringer.
Also on the depth chart are Michael Carter and Bam Knight. Carter has made one carry this season for one yard in the team’s loss against Seattle last week. Bam Knight could also see snaps now. He has primarily served as a kick returner this year, but he is now third on the depth chart behind Demercado and Carter.
