Many expect Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas to lead her team’s charge, as the 2025 WNBA playoffs enter their later stages. On Tuesday, Sept. 23, the Mercury took on coach Cheryl Reeve’s Minnesota Lynx in Game 2 of the 2025 WNBA semifinals.
After Thomas’ respectable outing in Game 1, where she put up 18 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and three steals in 37 minutes, the basketball world dissed her recent performance in the second game. The WNBA veteran struggled in Game 2 against the Lynx, as she could not find a groove on offense or on the glass.
Women’s basketball fans online were upset with Thomas’ performance, as seen in their reactions on social media.
“WNBA MVP candidate Alyssa Thomas can’t make a f*kin layup to save her life SMH. Hate this league,” one user shared.
“Alyssa Thomas inability to shoot the ball is a flaw, bro…She isn’t even attempting to shoot or just drive and make a layup,” another user said.
“Alyssa Thomas would deadass not shoot the ball an entire quarter if she could pad a double-double,” another pointed out.
“Alyssa Thomas just out there whining, blaming everybody and mad she getting cooked on top of that,” a user wrote.
Other X users chose to point out her struggles against the Lynx defense.
“Alyssa Thomas can’t guard Napheesa Collier 😂😂😂,” one user posted with a trio of laughing emojis.
“Alyssa Thomas is major cheeks, a layup merchant at best. Minnesota with a perfect gameplan for her,” another user explained.
“Alyssa Thomas having an absolute stinker of a game, Napheesa Collier is completely owning her 🫢,” a user claimed with an emoji.
In the 2025 regular season, Thomas has averaged 15.4 points, 8.8 rebounds, 9.2 assists, and 1.6 steals per contest. She is currently in her 11th year in the league after her four-year college basketball tenure with the Maryland Terrapins from 2010 to 2014. Thomas helped the Mercury finish with an overall record of 27-17 in the regular season.
