The 2025 season hasn’t been a smooth ride for Drake Maye. When the Patriots drafted him, the expectation was that the young quarterback would be consistent. However, he has only disappointed fans and analysts so far with his performances.
The latest example came in a tough loss to Pittsburgh, where turnovers once again derailed New England’s chances. After the game, Bill Simmons didn’t mince his words while calling out Maye, even calling him out for “stupid” errors.
Simmons noted that Maye shows flashes of brilliance on most plays, yet manages to undo them with a handful of reckless decisions. The frustration came through clearly as he urged the young quarterback to cut down on what he called “stupid” mistakes.
On the recent episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, the conversation shifted tone, leaning more towards humor. Cousin Sal, the co-host of the podcast, stated that he had a new nickname for Maye and asked if Simmons would like to hear it.
“He’s not too young for me to give him a nickname that you’re not gonna love,” Sal said. “I’m ready for it, he probably deserves it,” Simmons responded. “Drake Maybe. You’ve got to say it like, Drake…Maybe?? Right? He may be good, I don’t know.”

While Sal was explaining the use of Maye’s new nickname, Simmons couldn’t hold back his laugh. He admitted that he liked the nickname. However, he stated that he will probably never call the Patriots quarterback ‘Drake Maybe.’
Simmons outlined that he believes in Maye’s talent. He believes that the 23-year-old has a lot of potential and plays the majority of the game really well. At the same time, he thinks Maye can’t help himself and will inevitably end up making some terrible on-field decisions.
Drake Maye Said That the Mistakes Are Hurting the Team
After the loss against Pittsburgh, Maye said that mistakes such as turnovers are hurting the team. Despite playing well for the most part, they are losing because of a few costly mistakes.
“You know, I think it’s one of those things that like it kept piling on,” Maye said as per the team’s website. “Big Morgan Moses brought the team together, brought the offense together, and went back, and we scored. I hit Hunt, and then, yeah, we got the ball back tied, and, yeah, I cost us. So it hurts.”
While the losses will hurt the team, they’re still three weeks into the new season. So, there’s a lot of scope to improve from here, work on the elements that are costing them dearly, and start getting on track.
Maye said that the entire team is working hard to make sure they don’t keep making the same mistakes. If he ends up tightening loose ends, the Drake Maybe nickname might not stick around for long.
