Florida State quarterback Tommy Castellanos has been one of the most exciting players in college football this season. His dual-threat ability has powered the Seminoles’ offense and brought plenty of attention.
But his momentum was stalled in the matchup against Kent State on Saturday, when he left the field with an injury.
The injury came late in the second quarter. After releasing a pass, defenders rolled up on his lower leg. Castellanos limped toward the sideline and was immediately checked by trainers. He managed to walk off without assistance but was clearly favoring the leg. The team later confirmed he would not return.
“Castellanos is still walking with a slight limp as the team heads to the locker room, but is walking without help from anyone else,” WARCHANT posted on X, minutes after the injury.
Before the setback, Castellanos had put up big numbers. He completed 10 of 13 passes for 205 yards. He added 54 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground, though he also threw one interception. Freshman Kevin Sperry entered as the backup once Castellanos exited.

Early indications point to an ankle or lower-leg issue, but the severity has not been confirmed. Castellanos’ availability remains unclear going forward. The Seminoles were comfortably ahead when he left, so the injury did not impact the outcome against Kent State.
The bigger question is how long he may be sidelined. Castellanos has been a crucial piece for Florida State. His health will be a key storyline as the team moves into the heart of its schedule.
His path to Florida State has also been notable. Since transferring from Boston College, Castellanos has been adamant about proving that he belongs in the conversation for the best quarterbacks in collegiate football.
He wasted no time silencing doubters, leading statement drives, and showing poise well beyond his years. His strong start has already elevated expectations for the Seminoles this season.

Joel Klatt Has Tommy Castellanos in His Top 10 QBs
Earlier this week, Joel Klatt put together his top 10 quarterbacks list for the season. Klatt had Castellanos at number six. Although he believes the QB has scope for improvement, putting him inside the top 10 seemed reasonable to him.
“His numbers are not going to blow you out of the water, and more specifically because they’ve only played two games, but they’ve beat Alabama, they’ve played kind of a nobody,” Klatt said (from 21:46).
Klatt praised Castellanos’ performance against Alabama, arguing that the QB’s performance can’t be judged based on the scoresheet, as everything else he did on the field was commendable too.
The injury comes at a critical moment. Florida State has big conference matchups ahead, and Castellanos’ health will directly influence how far the team can go. If he recovers quickly, he has the talent to keep the Seminoles in contention. If not, the offense will face a major test in adjusting without its leader.
