Bryce Underwood is among the rare quarterback breeds who gets to start in his freshman season for a prestigious Big Ten program in the Michigan Wolverines. Though he lost against Oklahoma in Week 2, he picked the slack in a dominant 63-3 win against Central Michigan last week.
In Week 3 vs. Central Michigan, $3 million NIL quarterback Underwood showed his skills as a rusher. He rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. He also contributed through the air: 235 passing yards, one passing TD and an interception.
Ahead of their Week 4 clash against Nebraska on Saturday, Underwood’s running game received a bright endorsement from former national championship-winning head coach Urban Meyer. The former Ohio State coach picked up a video footage from one of his rushing touchdown, where he used his tailback to block a defender and create a straight path to the endzone with ease.
“This is the play that changes it all,” Meyer said. “It’s called a quarterback direct one, something you remember. He did not show this the first few games. This is quarterback counter. The offense line is simply blocking counter. Now, instead of handing the tailback like we showed on the board, you know what tailback is.
“He’s the lead blocker right. You are a +1 in the box to anytime you want a direct RO with a quarterback tremendous athlete again outrunning the angle is safety and this is a big cat run in the ball,” he added.
With this explanation, Meyer sounded alarm for the Nebraska Cornhuskers on what they are in for when they face the freshman on the gridiron.
“This play to me put every defense quarter, especially John Butler, the Nebraska Defense Court. You are on now on call because you have a quarterback run in the offense,” Meyer further added.

Bryce Underwood Turning Out To Be Every Bit Of QB Michigan Wants
After his lackluster performance against Oklahoma, Bryce Underwood has settled down in the college football scene. So far this season, he has 46 completions on 80 attempts for 628 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He has also added 108 rushing yards and two rushing scores.
After letting him use the full toolset in the CMU game, it is an indication that the coaches now trust Underwood to run his own set of plays.
“No disrespect to anybody, but coaches don’t win games, players do,” Sherrone Moore’s interim replacement Biff Poggi said. “My advice to (Bryce) was what I told him after he threw the interception against Central Michigan — I love that. I’m fine. Push the ball. Play hard, be creative. Be you. And if he does that, we’re going to be okay.”
It remains to be seen if Underwood delivers a good against a much better and organized team in Nebraska.
