After a decade-long hiatus, Jim Harbaugh and Pete Carroll will resume their rivalry on Monday Night Football, as the LA Chargers and the Las Vegas Raiders face off at 10 p.m. ET at Allegiant Stadium. Their rivalry dates back to the late 2000s, when both coaches were at the college level in the Pac-12: Harbaugh with Stanford and Carroll with USC.
In the first half of the 2010s, they would again face each other regularly as NFL coaches: Carroll with the Seattle Seahawks and Harbaugh with the San Francisco 49ers. Their last meeting came in 2014, with the Seahawks beating the 49ers 17-7.

Their personal series is tied at 6-6, so whoever wins on Monday night will take the lead in proceedings. If we break down their rivalry, Harbaugh leads in college with two victories to Carroll’s one. In the NFL side of things, Carroll leads 5-4.
In the bigger picture, Carroll has had a more storied career. He’s one of only a handful of coaches to have won both a national title at the college level and a Super Bowl in the NFL. With USC, he won two national titles (three if you count his vacated 2005 win) and with the Seattle Seahawks, he won Super Bowl XLVIII.
For his part, Jim Harbaugh won the 2023 national title with the Michigan Wolverines, with whom he closed a second stint at the college level. The Super Bowl has so far eluded him, although he did take the 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII, where they lost to his brother, John Harbaugh, and the Baltimore Ravens.
A fun fact of his 2025 rematch with Harbaugh is that the game coincides with his 75th birthday.
Who’s The Favorite For Monday Night Football, Jim Harbaugh Or Pete Carroll?
The Chargers are slight favorites coming into the game, with ESPN Bet having them ahead in the spread by 3.5 points. ESPN’s Game Predictor seems a bit more sure about Harbaugh and the Chargers, giving them a 59.1% chance of winning the encounter.
The Chargers opened their season with a surprise win over the Kansas City Chiefs, 27-21. The Raiders also won their Week 1 game, a 20-13 victory over the New England Patriots.
