Former Iowa Hawkeyes guard Kate Martin and her Golden State Valkyries squad recently surpassed a record made by her former teammate Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever. On Tuesday, Sept. 9, @boardroom on Instagram revealed that Martin and the Valkyries have broken both the average and total game attendance records set by last year’s Fever squad, which featured Clark.
Coach Natalie Nakase’s Valkyries have had a great debut season so far for a WNBA expansion team. Currently, they have an overall record of 23-19 that places them as the fourth seed in the Western Conference. This also merits Golden State a guaranteed playoff spot in the upcoming WNBA playoffs, a first for an expansion franchise.
“The Golden State Valkyries just rewrote the WNBA record book. In their inaugural season, the expansion team sold out all 22 home games at Chase Center, setting new league highs for both average and total attendance. Their 397,408 fans topped the previous mark set last year by Caitlin Clark’s Fever. Golden State has also clinched a playoff berth, becoming the first WNBA expansion team to reach the postseason,” @boardroom wrote on Instagram.

In contrast to Martin and the Valkyries’ average game attendance of 18,064 spectators and total attendance of 397,408 attendees, the Fever logged 17,036 spectators and 349,313 total in the previous campaign. This is presumably due to Martin’s former teammate Clark and her arrival in the league.
With this development, Martin and the rest of coach Nakase’s team now look to finish off their regular season on a strong note, with two games remaining. On Tuesday, Sept. 9, they’ll be facing the Seattle Storm in away territory, followed by a tough West opponent in last year’s finalists, the Minnesota Lynx, to round out their campaign on Thursday, Sept. 11, also in their opponents’ home court.

Kate Martin And The Golden State Valkyries Swept Caitlin Clark and The Indiana Fever This 2025 Season
Kate Martin and the Golden State Valkyries clashed with Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever three times in the 2025 WNBA season, all of which the Valkyries won convincingly. Their first meeting came on June 19, wherein Golden State toppled Indiana by 11 points on their home floor, 88-77. Their next game came less than a month later on July 9, and the Valkyries once again defeated the Fever in the latter’s home arena, 80-61.
Their final meeting of the regular season came on Aug. 30, as Martin and the Valkyries went on to beat a Clark-less Fever team by 12 points, 75-63. Both teams will now aim for deep postseason runs, but Indiana will have to do it without their spitfire scorer, Clark, who had a season-ending injury and logged only 13 games this year.
