Billy Napier Takes Clear Stance On Brendan Bett’s Spitting Incident In USF Loss

The Florida Gators’ matchup with South Florida ended in disappointment, but the final score was only part of the story. Defensive tackle Brendan Bett’s ejection for spitting on an opponent during the closing moments overshadowed much of the on-field action.

The incident occurred late in the game as Florida fought to keep South Florida out of scoring range. Instead, Bett’s unsportsmanlike conduct led to his ejection, and the penalty gave the Bulls valuable yardage that helped them set up the decisive field goal.

Late in the fourth quarter, Florida held a 16-15 lead over USF and were in position to lock down the game. Bett’s action, in a way, resulted in his team blowing the lead and losing the game. Florida’s loss stung on its own, but Bett’s actions magnified the frustration and raised concerns about player discipline under pressure.

Head coach Billy Napier didn’t hesitate to address the matter during a press conference on Monday. He made it clear the act was unacceptable and emphasized accountability, both to the opponent and within the locker room.

“Yeah, Brendan? We spent quite a bit of time with him yesterday,” Napier said. “Look, you know, I think that the kid is remorseful. You know, I think he feels as if he let the team down. I do think he has, you know, in general, it was out of character for him, and he made a mistake, and he compromised the team. He made a selfish decision.”

Napier revealed that Bett came into his office and acknowledged that he didn’t represent the program the right way. The coach saw the acknowledgement as a positive sign and praised Bett for recognizing his mistake.

Billy Napier on How Brendan Bett Can Redeem Himself

Billy Napier’s swift response suggested he understood the stakes. He knows that one player’s actions can tarnish the program’s reputation and derail momentum for the season ahead. However, this isn’t going to be the end of it.

Rumors are floating around about his suspension and much more. During the aforementioned interaction, Napier explained what Bett will have to do now:

“So, there’ll be some internal discipline. Obviously, he was suspended (against South Florida).”

Billy Napier revealed that Brendan Bett will also issue a public apology and will reach out to South Florida and Cole Skinner to apologize for his unsportsmanlike behavior.
