After a disappointing start to the season, a 14-7 defeat to Ohio State in Week 1, the Texas Longhorns and Arch Manning proved that they still have what it takes to be national title contenders. The Longhorns defeated San Jose State 38-7 in Week 2, with Manning having a much more confident outing this time around.
The quarterback threw for 295 yards, with four touchdown passes and one interception. His completion percentage was an acceptable 63.3%. This earned the praise of his former teammate and current Dallas Cowboys running back, Jaydon Blue. The 2025 NFL Draft fifth-round pick jumped on his Instagram story and wrote the following message about Manning:
“Arch manning u are something serious bro 😂😂😂.”
Blue played for the Texas Longhorns between 2022 and 2024, sharing the locker room with Manning for the latter two years.

Texas Coach Steve Sarkisian Reacts to Arch Manning’s Performance Against San Jose State
Speaking shortly after the encounter, Steve Sarkisian seemed happy with the way his quarterback carried himself against the Spartans following the disappointing season opener against the Buckeyes last week.
Here’s what he said about Manning’s game against San Jose State:
“I thought he played aggressively. He threw the ball down the field. I thought he did a great job extending plays. He used his arm to create explosive plays. He used his legs, scrambles for a touchdown.”
Arch Manning didn’t feel as good as his supporters seem to think, as he blamed himself for the turnover he caused. Here’s what he said in the aftermath of the Lognhorns’ first victory of the year:
“Sloppy on my part. Can’t turn the ball over in the red area. I made a few more plays (than against Ohio State) but once again wasn’t very efficient.”
Even if Manning’s game improved dramatically from last week’s, the reality is that this remains subpar compared to what some in the media expect of him. One thing is sure: this isn’t the level of play expected from a Heisman Trophy candidate. While Manning was touted as the frontrunner for the award, expect Garrett Nussmeier to take hold of that honorary title for the first half of the season.
Texas will play against the UTEP Miners in Week 3 of college football.
