Urban Meyer Breaks Down Ryan Day’s Perfect Strategy That Blindsided Arch Manning in Quiet Game vs Ohio State

Quarterback Arch Manning had a lot of pressure on him heading into the season. Despite never starting a full season in college, he was expected to start for the Texas Longhorns and immediately be one of the best QBs in college football. To make things even more challenging, he was up against the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes.

On Wednesday, former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer appeared on the “Big Ten Network,” breaking down how Ohio State head coach Ryan Day had the perfect strategy by shutting down Manning with simulated pressure.

“The reason it was a bad scenario for him is because Matt Patricia’s not a whole lot of film for him to go back and look. They have excellent players, but also they confuse the quarterback,” Urban Meyer said (0:30). “What they did, they did something called simulated pressure. So, as a young kid, whenever you get pressure, pressure is a blitz. A linebacker or secondary to go with a d-lineman. Whenever that happens, a quarterback’s trained, it’s normally man coverage. You find the best matchup, deliver the ball.

“Ohio State did simulated pressure. They brought blitzes, but they played seven-man coverage. He got tentative. He got locked up, and as a result, it’s much too late once that happens. Now you’re in a pressure situation,” he added.

Arch Manning Will Have an Opportunity To Get Comfortable As the Starter Over the Next 3 Weeks

While Arch Manning did not have a strong season debut against Ohio State, he will have plenty of time to bounce back. After a challenging Week 1 matchup, the Longhorns are heading into a three-week stretch filled with games that should be much more manageable. They will play San Jose State on Saturday, followed by UTEP and Sam Houston the following two weeks.

Those three games should be easy wins for the Longhorns and should give Manning plenty of time to settle into the starting role. They will have their next big challenge after a Bye Week, against No. 13-ranked Florida on Oct. 4.
