Newly minted North Carolina Tar Heels football coach Bill Belichick is uncorking his first year at the helm of the UNC coaching staff in the 2025 college football season. This comes after his legendary career in the NFL, where he led franchises such as the New England Patriots and the New York Jets. Now, Belichick is coaching at the collegiate level for the first time in his long-tenured career.
The announcement came in December of last year, and he has become the 35th head coach for the school’s football program after the recent firing of Mack Brown, who served as the main tactician from 2019 to 2024. With this, Belichick reportedly signed a five-year contract with the Tar Heels that is worth at least $50 million over the next five years, and the first three years of the deal are guaranteed.
This contract came with a $10 million buyout option for UNC, in case the school and Belichick did not align properly and rescinded the deal before June 1 of this year. But June 1 has already passed, which means that the Tar Heels will now only owe Belichick $1 million as a buyout, $9 million less than the previous figure.
Nevertheless, Belichick doesn’t seem interested in returning to the NFL. Instead, there seems to be no apparent reason for Belichick to have his contract bought out now, given how less it has become.
With Belichick re-instating his commitment towards North Carolina for the foreseeable future, he is bringing his football coaching prowess from the league to the collegiate level. Belichick is considered one of the greatest coaches in football history, having won six Super Bowl championships as a head coach and two as an assistant coach. The now-73-year-old has had a lengthy career in football, having his first stint back in 1975.
