Candace Parker Calls for WNBA Roster Expansion After Indiana Fever Uses 17th Player Amid Injury Crisis

The Indiana Fever are going through a major injury crisis this season. After Caitlin Clark was ruled out ahead of the All-Star break due to a groin injury, the Fever faced another blow after Sophie Cunningham suffered a MCL tear in her right knee and was ruled out for the rest of the season. This brings in a lot of roster trouble, as there aren’t enough gaps to fill in.

Candace Parker and Aliyah Boston recently addressed this issue on their podcast ‘Post Moves.’ Parker wants the league to make some big changes to team rosters alongside roster size rules, given the Fever’s recent injury woes. She said:

“(Aerial) Powers is the 17th player to wear the Fever uniform this season. And no, the WNBA did not change the rules about roster sizes. This is actually the case—17th player on an 11-woman roster. I think it goes back to the cry of like, expand the roster. Because if you have someone that is the next man up with all of these injuries, at least they’re familiar with their offense.” (3:25)

Currently, the Indiana Fever sit sixth on the WNBA table, with a 21-18 record. They entered the season with much hope and optimism as one of the favorites for title contention. But now, with injury woes being one of their worst nightmares alive, this seems quite far-fetched.

Besides Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham’s injury, Sydney Colson also suffered an ACL tear in her left knee during a 95-60 loss to the Phoenix Mercury on Aug. 7. Aari McDonald suffered a broken bone in her right foot in the same game during the fourth quarter.

Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham struggling to accept her season-ending injury

Sophie Cunningham’s season-ending MCL injury seems to be taking a large toll on her. Neither did the Fever, nor did she anticipate this outcome, while going forward with the season. But, as Cunningham recovered from this injury, she shared some of the thoughts going through her head in the meantime.

Taking it to X, she wrote:

“Is it always this stressful being a fan? I can’t take it…can’t sit still.”

This post was supposed to be a light-hearted take on her new role as a sideline supporter for the Fever. But in all fairness, it does feel lamentable to watch your team struggle while not being able to contribute at the fullest capacity. Perhaps, she will get used to it for this season and come back better and stronger to lead the Fever as a veteran guard in the next WNBA season.
