The San Francisco 49ers finished their annual roster trimdown to the 53 players who will begin the 2025 season on the active roster. The final hours of the roster trimming deadline are always eventful. In San Francisco’s case, it was no different. The 49ers doubtlessly will hope to add several cut players to their practice team, but will also see several of their cuts sign with other NFL teams.
Here’s a rundown of five of the top players the 49ers had to cut on Tuesday. In at least one case, the cutting was basically a formality ahead of re-signing a veteran player who had no competition for his spot in preseason action. Again, the ensuing days should be interesting as these players sign with other teams, get picked up for the practice team, or simply disappear off the NFL radar.

Top 5 Players Cut on Tuesday by 49ers

Jeff Wilson Jr., RB
A veteran with 72 career NFL games played, Wilson had become a fan favorite with the 49ers. He began his NFL career in San Francisco, playing there from 2018 to the mid-2022 season. Wilson saw plenty of touches in the preseason, scoring two of the three 49ers rushing touchdowns in preseason play, but ending up with just 57 rushing yards on 19 carries. The 49ers would love to get Wilson back onto the roster soon.
Junior Bergen, WR
Bergen was the 49ers’ seventh-round pick in the 2025 draft, but found himself cut loose. The Montana product is indeed a wide receiver, but he was most notable as a punt returner. In college, he returned a whopping eight punts for touchdowns. But in the preseason, he fumbled a punt return in the 49ers’ preseason finale and caught just one pass for one yard. Given his special teams chops, Bergen seems likely to land somewhere soon.
Dallis Flowers, CB
Flowers missing the roster was a bit of a surprise, as he had played a fair amount with the starting group in preseason action. In his NFL career, Flowers has played in 23 games with five career starts. He spent most of his career to date with the Colts, but helped a decimated 49ers secondary, logging four tackles in preseason action. He could certainly find his way to another active roster for the 2025 season.
Terique Owens, WR
Owens had to be a sentimental favorite as the son of NFL legend Terrell Owens. An unsigned free agent ahead of the 2024 season, Owens caught two passes for 39 yards and a touchdown in the preseason. The late addition of Skyy Moore to the 49ers roster probably left the team more willing to part with some depth at the wide receiver position. Owens seems like a likely re-sign as part of the 49ers practice squad for 2025.
Thomas Morstead, P
Veteran punter Morstead might have been a surprise here, given that he’s the lone 49er who punted in preseason action. This is just a personnel move, and Morstead is expected to re-sign with the 49ers. The 39-year-old punter is a 16-year NFL veteran, and San Francisco will be his fifth NFL team if he does indeed end up making the roster. Again, with no other punter on the roster, it’s safe to expect San Francisco to get Morstead back for Week 1.
