Colin Cowherd Offers Blunt Take on Conspiracy Talk Over Shedeur Sanders Draft Slide: “The Whole League Told You He’s a 5th Round QB”

Colin Cowherd is not going to fall for the beliefs about Shedeur Sanders’ draft status. The Fox Sports host provided a blunt assessment regarding the quarterback situation in Cleveland and threw cold water on the notion that Sanders was somehow being disrespected in the 2024 NFL Draft.

On “The Herd with Colin Cowherd,” the seasoned media figure was quite forthcoming on his position. He believes Sanders landed in the spot the NFL collectively believed he should land, in the fifth round.

“The entire NFL told you he’s a 5th round pick and the Browns are telling you he’s a third string quarterback,” Cowherd stated (2:36).

“He was overvalued. I’m guilty as charged. I thought I can see him fall into the second round. I guess I’m wrong.”

These remarks come while Sanders prepares for what could be a pivotal preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday. Sanders was ruled out of the previous game against Philadelphia with an oblique strain and has returned to full health and team drills.

Shedeur Sanders Shows Promise Despite Colin Cowherd’s Assessment of Draft Value

In his first preseason game versus Carolina, Sanders had an outstanding first appearance. Sanders completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and 2 touchdowns, and not a single interception, to go along with 19 rushing yards to demonstrate the dual-threat ability that made him a star at Colorado.

Kevin Stefanski certainly was impressed with Sanders’s improvement after that game. And still, the rookie stated that he has no doubt he is prepared to play whenever the team calls on him.

However, Cowherd is of the opinion that the draft process went exactly as it should. He pointed to the evaluation throughout the league that saw Sanders available late as a fifth-round pick while some teams identified a clear need at the quarterback position and the opportunities to draft Sanders were there.

“Seven teams annually are desperate for quarterback and another 15 are desperate for a backup,” Cowherd noted. “The whole league passed for four rounds”, He remarked.

Cowherd referenced that he believes Browns owner Jimmy Haslam may have been the key influencer to drafting Sanders.

“Many of us believe Jimmy Haslam, the owner of the Browns, is the one that nudged the front office into drafting him,” Cowherd explained.

The current quarterback depth chart in Cleveland reflects the organization’s evaluation of their rookie investments. Joe Flacco is the starter with Kenny Pickett in at number 2 back. Sanders is third on the depth chart but might move up because of Kenny Pickett’s hamstring injury.
