The Alabama Crimson Tide are considered one of the strongest SEC teams in college football, though Kalen DeBoer’s squad may be getting some rough news ahead of the new season. This includes losing running back Jam Miller right before the new season begins.
Miller reportedly received an upper body injury on Saturday as they were doing their second scrimmage of the fall training camp. Reports indicate that Miller may be out for multiple games, though no return date has been revealed. This has been confirmed by DeBoer himself in a statement, revealing that Miller went through surgery:
“Jam Miller suffered an upper-body injury in Saturday’s scrimmage and went in for a procedure on Saturday evening,” he stated. “Jam should recover fully with a timetable for his return yet to be determined.”
This means that a running back battle between Richard Young and Daniel Hill is taking place to find out who will be replacing Miller while he is out with an injury, though the coaching staff only has a few days to decide, as the Aug. 30 opener against Florida State is fast approaching.
As for Jaeden Roberts, it is still unclear if the Crimson Tide right guard is cleared to play, as he was not able to participate in that second scrimmage on Saturday. He is currently on concussion protocol.
DeBoer confirmed he suffered a concussion and was also held out of the first scrimmage, even though he was penciled in as Alabama’s starting right guard for the season. The coach also noted that Roberts is currently injured and “”will be a long-term thing.” However, he did not give a timeline for his return, which means he may also be missing that opener against FSU.

Alabama Football Injury Updates Ahead of Florida State Matchup
With Jam Miller recently undergoing surgery and Jaeden Roberts possibly out with a concussion, which other players may miss the season opener against Florida State on Aug. 30? The answer may just be those two.
James Smith, who was out with an undisclosed injury, is seen to return to the field against FSU and possibly even be starting, according to DeBeor himself. The Crimson Tide head coach noted that Smith is showing a lot of progress in recovering from his injury and he is getting very close to returning.
“Feel good about the progress he’s had in the week of practice, being live. I think he needed to be held back there, but he’s getting closer by the day,” he said.
Smith was held back from the first scrimmage last week but is currently working out and working towards his return.
