“Wanted Me To Get a Foul”: A’ja Wilson Takes Playful Jab at Ex South Carolina Teammate Allisha Gray Over On-Court Collision

In a recent game in the WNBA, Las Vegas Aces forward Aja Wilson had a moment with a former South Carolina teammate, Allisha Gray, that quickly gained attention on social media. In a clip shared on Instagram by ESPNW, Wilson joked about the play in a press conference. “She wanted me to get a foul call, but it didn’t work out,” Wilson said while smiling.

The scene underscored the ongoing relationship between the two who have been teammates on Dawn Staley-led national championship South Carolina team in 2017. The now focal point of the Aces and the current MVP in the WNBA, Wilson continues to enjoy the playful competition with her old Gamecocks teammates. Gray, in the meantime, has become one of the most dependable guards on the Dream, averaging in the double figures in scoring for Atlanta.

Wilson made the comments during another superior season where she remains to bear the championship hopes of the Aces. The light-hearted bantering with Gray was a reminder of the dominance that South Carolina has had in past years as more and more players from Staley’s team happen to make it to the next level. In 2025, 12 of her former players had been on WNBA training camp rosters, according to the Greenville News.

A’ja Wilson’s MVP Form and the Aces’ Push in 2025

Although the viral video showed her joking with Gray, A’ja and the Aces have been making some noise recently. Las Vegas has won 9 out of its last 10 to surge back into the top four of the WNBA. The former MVP, Wilson, has also climbed up the MVP Odds board now with the third-best odds of any player, according to Sports Illustrated.

For Vegas, the star-studded recruitment of Jewell Loyd has not seen the expected boost, and Wilson seems to have been left doing most of the work. ESPN has moved the Aces up to 2 in their latest power rankings and noted Wilson as a primary contributor to their increase.

The league will continue to commemorate the influence of Staley and her South Carolina pipeline with Wilson, Gray, and others making a visible imprint in the WNBA. Even in a moment of fun at the expense of a former teammate, Wilson, as she so often is, was all business.
