Sophie Cunningham Promises Offseason Revenge After Latest Fine Over Paige Bueckers Comments Surfaces

The WNBA has been accused of being overly sensitive to criticism over the last couple of years. Recently, Sophie Cunningham has been on the receiving end of this attitude from the league. But sometimes, they don’t even need to be criticized to get riled up.

Something as simple as wearing a hat on the sidelines, when you’re not even playing in the game, can get you a fine warning. Ask Natasha Cloud. So, how do they respond to the accusations? Unfortunately, by being more sensitive about it.

On a recent episode of the ‘Show Me Something’ podcast, Cunningham revealed that she has been slapped with yet another fine. The Fever star didn’t reveal the amount that she’s been fined, but she briefly touched upon the reason behind it.

Cunningham was fined for her comments about how the officials treated Paige Bueckers during the August 12 game.

“I love Paige to death, don’t get me wrong,” Cunningham said on an episode of her ‘Show Me Something’ podcast. “I think she’s a hell of a player and would love to play with her one day, but those refs were giving her every frickin’ whistle last night. Like you literally couldn’t touch her. That’s just so annoying to me.”

Since the league has decided not to work on its tolerance, Cunningham isn’t going to be silenced. She said that she can’t wait for the offseason so that she can rip them apart in public again.

“I just can’t wait until the offseason so that I can rip them and then they can’t fine me,” Cunningham said on a recent episode of her podcast. “I’m not getting a paycheck in the winter.  It’s funny because we’re in a new CBA, so no one’s going to be under contract.”

Cunningham believes that the WNBA will be left with only two options. Either they kick her out of the league, which is highly unlikely, or they can wait for the new season to start so they can fine her again.

Sophie Cunningham recently suffered a season-ending injury

Cunningham suffered a season-ending knee injury during the game against the Connecticut Sun on Sunday. It’s been reported that she tore her right MCL. Cunningham was injured after Bria Hartley fell on her leg under the basket.

Despite the setback, Cunningham said on her podcast that she is in good spirits. She believes that an even bigger injury was avoided and urged people not to go against Hartley because she didn’t have any ill intention of harming her.

“There was no ill intent, I think it was a basketball play,” Cunningham said. “I was just in the wrong spot at the wrong time (and) she fell. There’s no way that she would go in there and potentially try to hurt me. I have nothing but love for Bria.”

Cunningham’s injury will put even more pressure on the Fever. They’re already playing without Caitlin Clark, who has been sidelined since July 15th due to a groin injury. With Cunningham being out of the picture for the rest of the season, the Fever will need Clark back in rotation as soon as possible.
