“The Desperation of a Losing University”: Fans Go Wild as Auburn Football’s 9 National Championships Claim Draws Backlash

On Tuesday, Auburn Football claimed seven more titles from the past, bringing its total tally to nine national championships.

When the news was made official, fans went into a frenzy as they tried to wrap their heads around this decision. Needless to say, the internet was divided in half. One side welcomed the decision and showed appreciation for the bold step.

The other side trolled the program for their desperate attempt to present themselves as a superpower in college football. Under a post on X by Justin Hokanson, fans expressed their feelings about this decision.

“The desperation of a losing university 🤣🤣” a fan wrote.

“Alabama is laughing at you. All of CFB is laughing at you. This is crazy,” another said.

Some fans made some strong arguments on why this shouldn’t be celebrated. A fan outlined how it shows a weak mentality from the program ahead of a new season.

“This is what you do when you know you’re going to suck. Go back and scour the records and claim wins from 20 years ago. Ole Miss used to do this when they weren’t competitive,” the fan wrote.

“If you can’t win ‘em, claim ‘em.  This is Auburn Football. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣” a fan commented.

    “This is pathetic,” another posted.

Of course, not everyone was against the idea.

“WAAAAAY overdue. And very very welcome,” one fan wrote.

Auburn will now recognize titles from 1910, 1913, 1914, 1958, 1983, 1993, and 2004, along with 1957 and 2010. Athletic director John Cohen, in a statement, explained why it’s important to recognize these titles.

John Cohen Believes the Auburn’s Title Recognition Was Long Overdue

Until this week, Auburn only recognized Associated Press National Championships. As a result, they were left with just two from 1957 and 2010.

Cohen believes that so far, Auburn has had a very humble approach to its legacy. But now, it’s time to give the great teams from the past their due credit. He said:

“Starting this fall, we have made the decision to honor the accomplishments of our deserving student-athletes, coaches, and teams from Auburn’s proud history. Our visible national championship recognitions now align with the well-established standard used by the NCAA’s official record book and our peers across the nation.”

Auburn is also adding three more conference titles to its total tally. The titles from 1904, 1908, and 1910 now bring their total number of conference championships to 15. The program plans on inviting back their players and coaches from these teams to honor them during the next season.
