“Punch Him”: Bill Belichick’s Defensive Wisdom Shines Through in UNC Linebacker Drill Mic’d Up Session

Legendary NFL head coach Bill Belichick is beginning the next stage of his coaching career. He is in the middle of his first training camp as the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels. This is his first year as a college coach after spending nearly 50 years in the NFL, winning six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots.

While there is some concern that Belichick’s coaching style might not translate to college from the NFL, most analysts agree his presence will have a positive impact on the Tar Heels. On Friday, a video was posted on the CBS Sports CFB Instagram account of Belichick mic’d up at Tar Heels practice. In the video, Belichick shows some of his defensive wisdom to his young linebackers.

“Eyes up. Plant off the inside of your outside foot. You see that guy there, don’t worry about the linebackers, if they don’t tell you anything, don’t worry, you take care of yourself. You handle the C gap. When you’re down in here, he can come down and smash you and go up to the next level. We got to get the inside guy, punch him,” Bill Belichick said.

Despite sometimes being harsh in his criticism of players, he was also reassuring. He was heard telling players “good job” throughout practice.

Bill Belichick Ends Trend for UNC Head Coaches

With Bill Belichick starting his college career at UNC, there are changes coming to how things are run around the football program. While things were expected to change on the field, there are also changes coming off the field. Notably, the school announced on Thursday that Belichick will not make weekly appearances on the Tar Heels’ weekly radio show.

He will appear on the first episode on Aug. 27, but afterwards, it will be general manager Michael Lombardi making the appearances. Former head coach Mack Brown was known for showing up for weekly appearances during his tenure.

While UNC fans might be disappointed that they will not get as much insight from Belichick, it is not all bad. Now, he will have the opportunity to put more of his focus into the team, ensuring the Tar Heels have as strong a season as possible.
