North Carolina is an anomaly in the college basketball realm across the country. When most programs are highlighted by college football, the Tar Heels stand tall in that crowd as the program that once housed Michael Jordan.
As a result, the Tar Heels receive benefits like no other basketball program. North Carolina’s men’s basketball program received $7 million, roughly 35% of the house settlement. UNC is permitted to share $20.5 million with its student-athletes for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Other than the 35% that went to the men’s basketball, UNC gave $13 million to football, and $250k each to baseball and women’s basketball. To show how Hubert Davis’ program benefited more than others, we can refer to a comment by Bubba Cunningham, athletics director of UNC.
“The settlement itself from the House case is 75-15-5-5: 75% to football, 15% to men’s basketball, 5% to women’s basketball, 5% to everybody else,” Cunningham said on UNC’s Carolina Insider podcast.
“That is one way to do it, and a lot of schools are doing it that way. When I looked at how we generate commercial activity, that’s not the way ours is broken down.”

Getting a $7 million revenue share can be huge for the Tar Heels’ men’s basketball. They have been on the prowl for a national title to end their championship drought for a long time. The Tar Heels won their first NCAA title in 1957.
They had to wait another 25 years for the second one. However, after the 1982 title, they won in 1993, 2005, 2009, and 2017. Since then, the Tar Heels have been trying to rewrite history, but have been unlucky so far.
Hubert Davis is excited for the new season with the UNC Men’s Basketball
Hubart is a UNC alumnus who represented the Tar Heels from 1988-1992. Eight years after his retirement from the NBA, he pivoted toward coaching in 2012 and joined his alma mater as an assistant coach.
During his tenure as an assistant coach, he won the NCAA title in 2017. In 2021, he was promoted to the head coaching position. Since then, the Tar Heels have made it to the NCAA Division I regional champion – Final Four once in 2022. Other than that, he doesn’t have anything else on his coaching resume to boast about. Needless to say, he’s under tremendous pressure.
But now, Davis feels confident about his team. In a school-issued statement, he said:
“I am very excited about this upcoming season and this year’s team, led by Seth Trimble. In college basketball’s current state, Carolina has been fortunate to have multiple accomplished veteran players choose to stay at UNC.”
Davis believes that Leaky Black, Armando Bacot, RJ Davis, and Seth Trimble are going to be difference makers for his program this season. He is confident that the team has enough versatile players to potentially end their trophy drought.
