Following her college career with head coach Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks, A’ja Wilson has become one of the biggest stars in the WNBA. Since entering the league in 2018, she has won three WNBA MVPs and two WNBA championships, all as a member of the Las Vegas Aces.
This season, Wilson has been having another strong year and is in the MVP discussion. On Wednesday, she spoke about her mindset ahead of her exceptional performance against Connecticut on Sunday and the team’s five-game winning streak.
“My mindset going in was just getting the win,” A’ja Wilson said. “We need to continue to stack wins the right way and play within our system. So, going in, I just wanted to make sure my teammates and I were all on the same page. So, we came out with a win, which is something I was really happy for.”
Wilson was then asked about what had changed for the Aces from the start of the season. The Aces struggled in the early stages of the year but have come on strong since around mid-July, becoming one of the hottest teams in the league.
“I think the biggest thing, and I kind of said this before. I think in the start of the season, we kind of got shook. We were kind of on our back legs. We were on the ropes, and we didn’t know how to hit back. We couldn’t weather storms well. I think this part of the season, where we are now, we’ve understood how to take the punch, but sometimes punch first and punch back in a lot of situations because this league is incredible.”

Wilson went on to discuss the importance of being able to weather storms. The team’s improvement in this area is what she believes was the driving factor for the Aces turning their season around.
