Days After DiJonai Carrington’s Trade, Paige Bueckers Set To Take Recruiting Responsibility For Dallas

Former UConn Huskies star and now Dallas Wings rookie Paige Bueckers is set to take on a huge responsibility early on to her WNBA career. On Sunday, Aug. 10, WNBA reporter Grant Afseth published a report in which Wings’ executive vice president and general manager Curt Miller was interviewed and was asked about how Bueckers meshes with the whole team and how they plan on building the franchise around her.

Miller then confirmed that both she and former Notre Dame Fighting Irish standout Arike Ogunbowale will be taking a more proactive role when it comes to player recruiting, as they have been showing interest in helping out scout players that Wings management could go for. This comes just days after Dallas traded away 2024 WNBA Most Improved Player DiJonai Carrington to the Minnesota Lynx in exchange for Diamond Miller, Karlie Samuelson and a 2027 second-round pick.

“Paige wants to be involved in recruiting players to Dallas. Arike also initiates free agency conversations with me. It’s exciting that your two best players consistently want to talk future. She’ll pick up the phone and call me, ‘What about so-and-so?’ I think she’s been through the good times, she’s been through some of the building years. She means a lot to this franchise, and she means a lot to me personally. We’re really excited about Arike,” Miller explained.

“Since the All-Star break, you see the way she and Paige communicate. You can hear them speaking the same language. That’s been exciting for us,” he added.

Bueckers entered the league after her 2025 NCAA championship berth with coach Geno Auriemma and the Huskies. They defeated the reigning 2024 national champions, South Carolina Gamecocks, in this year’s national championship game by 23 points, 82-59, to give the program its 12th national title ever.

Paige Bueckers is on track to be the Dallas Wings’ leading scorer for the 2025 WNBA season

Despite just being a rookie, Paige Bueckers has immediately made her impact known on the Dallas Wings, one that is significant to the team’s success. This is because the Hopkins, Minnesota native is currently averaging the most points for the squad at just 23 years old, as she is tallying around 18.6 points a game on 45.7% overall field goal shooting. Arike Ogunbowale is following closely behind with 15.6 points per contest.
