Bill Self Health Update: Insider Reveals Latest On Kansas Head Coach Following Hospitalization

Bill Self suffered a health scare a few weeks ago, which forced him to be hospitalized at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He started developing concerning symptoms, and he had to be hospitalized, and eventually had two stents inserted into blocked arteries. The situation arose immediately after Self directed the last Kansas practice of the summer session.

This wasn’t the first time that the Kansas Jayhawks head coach suffered a significant heart issue, as in 2023, he missed the Big 12 NCAA tournament also due to complications with his health. However, according to a report by analyst Jeff Goodman, the Jayhawks coach doesn’t expect this new health scare to prevent him from coaching in 2025-26:

“Just got off the phone with Kansas coach Bill Self after his health scare a couple weeks ago in which he underwent a heart catheterization and had two stents placed for blocked arteries: Self said he received a clean bill of health from the doctors, has been back in the office daily, is able to play golf and is looking forward to the players returning in about 10 days. “I don’t have any restrictions coaching,” Self told @TheFieldOf68″ Wrote Goodman on X

Bill Self has been up and about since being released from Lawrence Memorial, appearing in press conferences and interviews.

Bill Self’s statement on health scare and positive outcome

The fact that he came out of the situation with barely any consequences doesn’t mean Bill Self isn’t grateful or doesn’t understand how dangerous this development could’ve been for him. Shortly after being released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Self released the following statement as per Associated Press:

“I want to thank all the amazing doctors and nurses at LMH Health for the excellent care I received during my stay,” Self said in a statement. “I feel strong and am excited to be home. Our team has had a productive summer, and I’m looking forward to recharging and preparing for the upcoming season.”

It’s clear modern medicine saved Self from what could’ve been a very close call. The Jayhawks start their season on Oct. 24th with an exhibition game against Louisville. That should give the coach more than enough time to recover.
