“She Can’t Be a Great Player”: Jeff Teague Stands Firm on Caitlin Clark’s Current Superstar Status, Sets Candace Parker As Benchmark For Indiana Star

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has quickly become one of the faces of the WNBA. While she is only in her second season, she is already the most recognizable player in the league. However, that does not mean she is the best player in the league. Clark emerged as a superstar because of her shooting ability in college with Iowa, and those abilities translated to the start of her professional career.

However, there are some people who believe that Clark is getting too much hype too soon. On Thursday, former NBA player Jeff Teague spoke about this on the “Club 520 Podcast.” Teague spoke about how Clark is a good player but can’t be great yet because she is only in her second season. He mentioned Candace Parker as the only player to be great when she came into the league.

“But I was saying Caitlin Clark is a good player,” Jeff Teague said (0:55). “She’s only been in the league for two years. She can’t be a great player. The only great player that ever came in the league like that was Candace Parker.”

Teague and his co-hosts then started to discuss some other players and whether many players other than Parker came into the league and were immediately great. Teague stood firm in his stance.

“They were good, they turned great. I’m not saying Caitlin Clark won’t be a great player, but right now, she’s just a good player. There are people in the league better than her. She’s on her way to greatness, she ain’t great yet,” he said.

Women’s Basketball Legend Nancy Lieberman Defends Caitlin Clark

These comments from Jeff Teague were not the first he made about Caitlin Clark. In July, he also spoke about Clark, calling her good, but not that good. This got a response from women’s basketball legend Nancy Lieberman, who defended Caitlin Clark from Teague on the “3s and Ones” podcast this week.

“I don’t agree with Jeff Teague, who I read something today said that, ‘Caitlin Clark, well she’s just a good player. She’s not a great player.’ Jeff, I love you. You weren’t a great player. You were serviceable. I know you made the All-Star team one time. So I’m sorry, if we’re gonna be honest, I’m happy for your career,” she said.

These comments from Liberman are what prompted Teague to speak about Clark again on his podcast this week.
