Joel Klatt Lays Out “Bare Minimum” for Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer To Stay off Hot Seat

Head coach Kalen DeBoer is heading into his second season leading the Alabama Crimson Tide. While last season was not an outright failure, it was a disappointment. The team missed the College Football Playoff and only had nine wins. While that is a strong season by most teams’ standards, Alabama holds a high standard for itself.

On Thursday, a recent clip of Joel Klatt was posted on his YouTube channel. In the clip, Klatt spoke about the bare minimum DeBoer needs to do for this season to be a success for the Crimson Tide.

“I’m going to start with this. They’ve never missed the playoff two years in a row. And Kalen DeBoer does not want that on his record in just his second season as the head coach at Alabama,” Joel Klatt said (Timestamp 0:10). “This team has to go to the College Football Playoff. Like that is bare minimum.”

“Now, I’m going to put them inching towards the final four here as if that’s a ladder or a timeline because I really think they probably need to win a game in the College Football Playoff, but they absolutely have to go to the College Football Playoff.”

Joel Klatt Believes That the Addition of Ryan Grubb Will Help Kalen DeBoer and the Alabama Crimson Tide

Joel Klatt continued to speak about Kalen DeBoer and his upcoming season with Alabama. He mentioned the addition of Ryan Grubb as the team’s offensive coordinator as a good move. Grubb served as the offensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies when DeBoer was the head coach there.

“Ryan Grubb being back for them as their offensive coordinator, I think, is huge,” Joel Klatt said (Timestamp 0:40). “And it’s not back for Alabama, it’s back for Kalen DeBoer. This is a program that is used to being the pinnacle of the sport.”

Klatt went on to talk about how Kalen DeBoer was viewed by most analysts as the right choice to be Nick Saban’s successor at the time he was named as head coach. He still believes that DeBoer is a good coach, but he needs to prove it by at least qualifying for the College Football Playoff. However, he admitted it would be better if they won at least one playoff game.

Klatt discussed how he does not think it is reasonable to hold DeBoer to the standard set by Nick Saban. However, if the team misses the College Football Playoff two years in a row, especially in the new 12-team format, it will be a huge disappointment.
