Sophie Cunningham is a new member of the Indiana Fever this season. After six years as a member of the Phoenix Mercury, Cunningham joined the Fever in the offseason, teaming up with superstar Caitlin Clark. As a result, Cunningham has a front-row seat to one of the biggest new rivalries in the WNBA, Caitlin Clark vs. Paige Bueckers.
The two most recent No. 1 picks are already two of the biggest stars in the league. While Cunningham gets to see Clark up close every day, she does not have the same luxury with Bueckers. On Tuesday, Cunningham released a new episode of the “Show Me Something” podcast and talked about how she feels about Bueckers and their off-court relationship.
“I love her,” Sophie Cunningham said. “No, I don’t really have a relationship with her off the court but I just love her vibe and her energy. I just think that she is a good freaking human. She really is. She’s just like a great teammate and she’s a phenomenal leader and I am all for that. She’s probably gonna get rookie of the year, as she should.”
“So, there is this one play in the second half, she like went to the left and I cut her off and she did like a step-through and banked it. We were there so the whole crowd’s like ‘ooooo.’ I was like, alright, yeah, that’s a good move and we were running back and she goes, ‘Hey I traveled on that last one.’ I was like, ‘You know I kind of thought you did.’ You know what I mean? We were just like talking it up,” she added.

Sophie Cunningham Compares Traveling in the WNBA and NBA
Sophie Cunningham continued the discussion about Paige Bueckers, bringing up how, later in the game, Cunningham told her coaches to challenge a play, but they did not listen to her. Then Bueckers came up to her afterward and said that her coaches should have challenged the play. Cunningham joked with Bueckers that her coaches never listen to her.
Cunningham’s co-host, West Wilson, then asked her if there is a difference between traveling in the WNBA and the NBA. Cunningham gave a brief answer, saying that she thinks that traveling is way more of a problem in the NBA.
“There’s nothing like the NBA when it comes to their traveling,” Sophie Cunningham said.
