Warren Sapp Expresses Concerns Over Colorado’s Defensive Line in 2025: “I Have To Start Recruiting”

Warren Sapp was added to the Colorado Buffaloes coaching staff before last season as a senior quality control analyst. It was Sapp’s first coaching opportunity despite retiring as a player back in 2007. Sapp quickly had an impact on the players and became a valuable member of the coaching staff. As a result, head coach Deion Sanders, also known as Coach Prime, promoted him to pass rush coordinator in the offseason.

While Sapp earned the promotion, it also came with increased responsibility. On Tuesday, while talking to reporters, Sapp spoke about how he needs to start recruiting for the team’s defensive line if it is going to be successful long term.

“I really didn’t know who I had in the room until Prime said, raise your hand if you’re a senior, and I said, my God, I have to start recruiting,” Warren Sapp said.

Before he started his coaching career, Warren Sapp had a Hall of Fame career as a defensive tackle in the NFL. He played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders during his career from 1995 to 2007. He was part of the Bucs when they won Super Bowl XXXVII. During his college days, he was a member of the Miami Hurricanes.

Warren Sapp Speaks About What It Is Like To Coach With Another Deion Sanders Hire, Domata Peko

Warren Sapp was passionate during his playing career, and that has translated to his coaching. On Tuesday, he also spoke about coaching with a new Deion Sanders hire, Domata Peko. He was hired as the defensive line coach for the team during the offseason.

“Good cop, bad cop,” Sapp said. “I poke him all the time, I’m like ‘Come on, man.’ He’s like, ‘I know, I know.’ He’s just a big, lovable guy, but we go at it.”

“We make sure we are detailed in what we’re doing, because it’s the little things. It’s not the mountain in front of you; you’re going to find a way around it. It’s the rock in your shoe that’ll drive you crazy, because every other step, that rock is affecting you. That’s what we’re trying to teach them,” he added.

Peko is another one of many former players on the Colorado coaching staff. He played in the NFL from 2006 to 2020.
