“How You Would Still Have Trust In This Organization”: Shannon Sharpe Shreds Browns’ Culture For ‘QB Franchise’ Narrative After Lowballing Shedeur Sanders

Shedeur Sanders is currently QB4 at Cleveland, and that doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon. The Browns have prioritized the development of fellow draftee Dillon Gabriel throughout the preseason training camp, with the former Oregon signal-caller taking most of the training snaps with the first-team offense, even ahead of Joe Flacco.

This is the case, even though Gabriel has struggled heavily during the preseason training camp, throwing several picks and consistently failing to reach the end zone. It has made fans wonder why the franchise doesn’t give Sanders a bigger role during training camp.

Former NFL player Shannon Sharpe asked himself the same question on Thursday’s episode of “Night Cap.”

“They drafted Shedeur in the fifth round. They’re not expecting much of Shedeur. They didn’t because if they thought that much of him, they’d have drafted him higher. If they thought that much of him, they would have given him a fair opportunity. But that’s not what they’ve done,” Sharpe said (5:49).

“Look, that’s their organization. They run it how they see fit. But I don’t know in people in Cleveland, I don’t know how you would still have trust in this organization, considering how many quarterbacks and for every quarterback, they say, ‘Oh, he’s franchise. He’s franchise.’ You said that with Derek Anderson. Baker got injured and you moved on from him. Now Baker didn’t have the weapons that he has in Tampa,” he added.

As per reports, the Browns don’t consider either Shedeur Sanders or Dillon Gabriel ready to start in the NFL, but they believe the former Oregon quarterback is further along in his development. Thus, they have barely given Sanders a chance to take drills with the first-team offense during their preseason training camp.

Shedeur Sanders to start in Cleveland Browns’ preseason opener

Not everything is doom and gloom for Shedeur Sanders. The former Colorado quarterback will get a chance to prove his worth during the Browns’ preseason opener, as he has been slated to be the starter for the game against the Carolina Panthers on Friday, according to ESPN.

Hamstring injuries to Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel, paired with a potential desire from the coaching staff to preserve veteran Joe Flacco, have opened the door for Sanders to be the starter of the Cleveland franchise on Friday.
