When Deion Sanders was out, missing much of Colorado’s team practices and recruitment visits, he kept his battle with a cancerous tumor from the public, though many of his loved ones knew. However, he kept his cancer diagnosis from his mother, Connie.
During the latest video from Well Off Media, it was revealed that his mother did not know that her son had cancer at all, and he talked about not telling her in the video. In the video, Coach Prime’s son, Deion Jr., asked him what his grandmother’s reaction was to the cancer diagnosis, and here was what Deion Sr. said:
“She don’t know anything. Let me tell my mama that. Shoot,” he said. “We can’t do that. My mama got her own stuff going on. She can’t worry about me.” (10:35)
To this day, Deion Sanders’ mom still has no idea that he had a cancerous tumor taken out of him, even with his very public press conference announcing the news that he is now cancer-free to the world. As Sanders noted, he did not want his mother, who is now at a very advanced age, to know about it and worry about him.
In his press conference, the elder Sanders revealed he was going back to Boulder after missing a lot of team practices due to his condition. The University of Colorado had helped out a lot in his surgery, including having one of the best robotic bladder surgeons in the world operate on him. He is now cancer-free and is currently overseeing the Buffaloes’ training camp in Boulder ahead of the 2025 season.

It Was His Mother, Connie, That Inspired Deion Sanders To Do Better in Football
Throughout his NFL career, Deion Sanders has often spoken about his mother, Connie, and how she worked hard for him when he was still a child. She had separated from his dad and raised him alone as a single mom, and this led to a life of hardship for her and her son.
Sanders noted that she worked at a hospital and was often too busy to even watch him play. Her hard work and dedication led him to want to seek a better life for her.
“My mother never saw me play in a high school soccer, baseball, or basketball game because she was always working. She worked night shifts to support us,” he said. “I’m going to make a lot of money so you never have to work again.”
He continues to be very loving to his mother and often seeks to give her a much more comfortable life these days, and this may be why he never wants her to worry.
