UConn Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma is the most successful coach in the history of women’s college basketball. He has been the coach of the Huskies since 1985 and has led them to 12 national championships, including one this past season. As a result, it is not surprising to hear that some NBA teams have inquired about his services over the years.
In June 2024, Auriemma sat down for an interview on “The Dan Patrick Show.” Auriemma was asked about the inquiries for him to join NBA teams. He opened up about getting asked to be an assistant and admitted that if he were younger when he was asked, he might have considered it. Auriemma did not say when he was given the offer.
“I talked to a couple of people about being an assistant when I thought this game was going where it’s going,” Geno Auriemma said (4:30). “I thought, ‘Wow, I wish I was younger,’ because I was at an age where it’s like, do I really have it in me to be that and be fair to that for a hundred-some games, if you’re lucky enough, during the season? I wouldn’t be so pretentious enough to think I could, from where I am or where I’ve been, coaching women’s basketball.
“I know coaching is coaching. I get it, but the distance and the gap, I thought, ‘You know what? If I could be an assistant here for a couple of years, three or four years, I think I could do this job.’ But it just came at the wrong time in my career. If it came earlier, I would have done it.”
Geno Auriemma and the UConn Huskies’ Nonconference Schedule for 2025–26 Is Revealed
While Geno Auriemma never got the opportunity to coach at the NBA level at an age he would have considered it, he has still had plenty of fun with the Huskies. This past season, the team broke a nearly decade-long championship drought, defeating South Carolina in the national championship game.
The Huskies will be looking to defend their national title next season, and on Friday, they got some information about how their season will go. Their nonconference schedule was revealed.
The Huskies will compete against several top nonconference teams next season, including rivalry games against Notre Dame and Tennessee in 2026. The Huskies’ first nonconference game is a marquee game in Germany against Louisville on Nov. 4. Nine of their nonconference opponents are against top 35 teams from last season, according to the NCAA Net Rankings.
