Former Heisman winner Cam Newton had a strong but tumultuous college career. He started his career with Florida but left after two seasons following an incident where Newton allegedly stole a laptop from another student. He also faced expulsion because of academic dishonesty before transferring to Blinn College.
Newton’s relationship with former Florida head coach Urban Meyer has been discussed heavily over the years. On Thursday, Newton appeared on the “Glory Days w/ Johnny Manziel” podcast and spoke about his relationship with Meyer. He admitted that while they had a difficult relationship at the time, he still has a lot of respect for him.
“When I left Florida, I left on my own terms but it wasn’t the best terms with the coach and even for Urban, who I have the utmost respect for, he didn’t think I was a quarterback,” Cam Newton said (Timstamp 20:35). “It was so much rebelliousness in how I wanted to prove. I channeled that energy to making me the best player that I can, other than sometimes people take that so personal, where it’s now counterproductive to your overall development.”
Cam Newton went on to talk about how he channeled his energy positively. However, he admitted he was happy not to need to play Florida in the SEC championship game.
“I did not allow that to happen. I just wanted the opportunity. I just wanted the platform so that I could showcase what I was capable of doing. It still came down to my teammates performing as well as myself performing as well to. I’m just glad that it did. We were so close to playing Florida for the SEC championship. I’m glad that we didn’t because it would’ve been too much emotion.”

Cam Newton Went On To Have Success at Auburn After His Stint in Florida
In Florida, Cam Newton did not play much behind QB Tim Tebow. A lack of playing time, along with off-field issues, led to Newton transferring to Blinn College for a season in 2009. He then returned to the top of college football in 2010 with the Auburn Tigers. There, he won the Heisman Trophy and the BCS national championship.
Newton’s performance made him one of the top prospects in the nation, and he was selected first in the 2011 NFL draft by the Carolina Panthers. Newton went on to have a stellar NFL career, winning the MVP in 2015 and leading his team to a Super Bowl appearance the same year.
