Bill Self Health Update: Kansas HC Shares Heartwarming Update After Heart Surgery

Kansas Jayhawks coach Bill Self has been facing some health issues. He reportedly was not feeling well and was sent to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for a check-up but ended up getting a heart procedure. Self experienced some “some concerning symptoms” on Friday that led to that procedure and was released the next day.

The school itself revealed that two stents were inserted into Self during the procedure and he is now on his way to a full recovery.

Soon after Kansas released this report, Bill Self himself released an official statement which provided an update on his health.

“I want to thank all the amazing doctors and nurses at LMH Health for the excellent care I received during my stay there,” he said in his statement. “I feel strong and am excited to be home. Our team has had a productive summer and look forward to our batteries being recharged and prepping for this upcoming season.”

This was not the first time that the coach had a health scare, as he had one in 2023. While this latest one happened in the off-season, the 2023 incident happened during the playoffs, particularly the Big 12 tournament and NCAA tournament. Norm Roberts took over as head coach for Kansas that year, with Self changing his perspective and becoming more active in his health choices.

This season, Bill Self has all the reason to stay healthy, as his squad will feature top-ranked freshman Darryn Peterson, who is projected by many mock drafts to go No. 1 overall in the NBA Draft next year.

The University of Kansas also revealed in a statement that Self is now doing well after his heart procedure:

“Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self felt unwell and experienced some concerning symptoms Thursday,” the statement revealed. “He was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he had two stents inserted. The procedure went very well, and he is expected to make a full recovery. He is in good spirits and expects to be released from the hospital soon.”

What Was Bill Self’s Health Scare in 2023?

Much like his current health scare, Bill Self’s health scare back in 2023 was also related to his heart problems. The Kansas Jayhawks head coach was preparing his team for the Big 12 Tournament that year when he started complaining of chest tightness and balance issues.

The incident happened ahead of the Jayhawks’ first-round matchup against West Virginia, and he was soon admitted to a hospital where much like this latest one, doctors inserted two stents into his heart. This procedure would unblock arteries in his heart.

Since becoming a head coach of Kansas since 2003, Bill Self has led the team to a 624-156 record, which includes four NCAA tournament Final Four appearances and two national championships.
