Despite Caitlin Clark’s Absence, Ex Iowa Teammates Kate Martin, Jada Gyamfi and More Mark Their Presence for WNBA All-Star 3-Point Contest

The WNBA All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis was supposed to be a celebration of Caitlin Clark, but an injury to her right groin prevented her from participating in the activities. Clark, who used to be Iowa’s star player, was supposed to participate not just in the All-Star Game, where she was supposed to be one of the team captains, but was also supposed to go head-to-head with Sabrina Ionescu in the Three-Point Contest.

The Three-Point Contest showdown between Clark and Ionescu was highly anticipated, and with Clark out of the picture, the New York Liberty star won the contest.

Despite Clark being absent, however, many of her former teammates at Iowa showed up at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis to show their support. These include former Hawkeyes Kate Martin, Jada Gyamfi and Gabbie Marshall. All three took to their Instagram Stories and showed that they were at the Three-Point Contest, watching it all go down live, Caitlin Clark or not.

Among the three former Hawkeyes, only Kate Martin is in the WNBA, playing for the Golden State Valyries and actually has a winning record against her former Iowa teammate, Caitlin Clark, being undefeated against her in the WNBA so far.

Back when they were still in college, Caitlin Clark led them all to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA national title game, though they lost both instances. Clark also led the Hawkeyes to back-to-back Big Ten Tournament championship wins during her time with the team, with the school ultimately retiring her No. 22 jersey after she left for the WNBA.

As for the Three-Point Contest, Sabrina Ionescu, who once almost defeated Steph Curry in a three-point shootout, had one of the hottest hands of the night, especially in the final round. She sank 25 of her 27 attempts for a near-perfect 37 points, breaking the WNBA Three-Point Contest record.

Caitlin Clark Seen Enjoying All-Star Weekend Festivities As a Fan

As for Caitlin Clark herself, she was in Indianapolis herself, but not as a participant, but as a fan. She was seen in the front row enjoying both the Skills Challenge and the Three-Point Contest, even though she was not competing, as she sat with several fellow WNBA stars who were just there to enjoy themselves.

At one point, she took to her Instagram Stories to cheer on teammate Lexie Hull during the Three-Point Contest, though she did not win against Ionescu, who was seen as the favorite coming into the contest, especially with Clark being out.

Clark was supposed to lead Team Clark the next day against Team Collier, but was ordered to rest her injured right groin ahead of the All-Star break.
