The 2025 ESPYs Awards have finally wrapped up, with comedian Shane Gillis showing his hosting chops at the biggest awards show for sports. In his opening monologue, he skewered several sports personalities, from UFC fighters like Jon Jones to baseball stars like Shohei Otani. For college football, he also touched on one of the biggest storylines coming into the 2025 season: Bill Belichick and Jordon Hudson.
The controversial couple, whose relationship has overshadowed everything Bill Belichick has so far done at North Carolina since taking over as head coach, were skewered by the comedian during the opening monologue, joking about their 48-year age gap, joking that Belichick reads to his 24-year-old girlfriend at bedtime as a dad does to his kids.
“Shohei is a once in a generation talent. No one has been able to do what he does at so many positions: pitcher, hitter and bookie. A bookie is what Bill Belichick reads to his girlfriend before bed time,” the comedian joked. “They do, they read The Very Horny Caterpillar, The Little Engine That Could But Needed a Pill Fist and of course the classic Goodnight Boobs.”
He did have some mixed reactions from the crowd for his next joke about the couple, though, which Gillis himself admitted that he should have cut from the monologue.
“First off he’s 73 years old and he’s dating a hot 24 year old and people are criticizing him. What happened to this country?” he said, “We used to be a great country. He won six Super Bowls. He’s dating a hot 24-year-old. Maybe if you guys won six Super Bowls you wouldn’t be sitting next to a fat ugly dog wife.”
Hudson and Belichick have become the focal point of talks regarding North Carolina football, with many of the university’s alumni and faculty reportedly sending the school angry letters regarding the couple shedding a bad light on the school.

Bill Belichick Insists GF Jordon Hudson Has No Role in UNC Football
With all the backlash his relationship has generated, with critics accusing Hudson of being a gold digger only in the relationship for money, the new UNC head coach has come out and said that his girlfriend has nothing to do with his program.
“No, she doesn’t have any role in the UNC football program,” Bill Belichick said. “But again, there’s been noise out there about a lot of different things. Again, our focus is day-to-day, getting better, stacking good days together.”
This statement happened during an interview with WRAL’s Heidi Kirk, who asked Belichick if Hudson will be on the sidelines watching UNC games, and this caused the six-time Super Bowl winner to chuckle before answering.
