On Monday, Vanderbilt Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia made a bold claim at the 2025 SEC Media Day, drawing reactions from fans on the internet. This year’s edition of the annual event to kick off the powerhouse conference had Pavia in attendance, as he is entering the 2025 college football season as a four-year veteran.
According to On3’s college football insider Brett McMurphy, Pavia was asked what motivated him to return and play out a second season at Vanderbilt, fourth overall. The Albuquerque, New Mexico, native pointed to his team’s up-and-down campaign in 2024 and said:
“Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia: ‘Going 7-6 (last year) wasn’t good enough. I came back because I want to win a national championship.”

McMurphy’s report on Pavia’s quote has made rounds on social media, even reaching college basketball fans and Reddit users, who vividly disagreed with the incoming senior’s claims for his transfer to the Commodores.
“Delusions?” one user questioned.
“I’ll have what he’s having, please,” another user jokingly said.
“I bet the house on a vandy natty. Don’t tell my wife,” another shared.
“Yes! I need this kind of confidence in my life,” a user posted.
Users on X/Twitter also echoed the same sentiments over Pavia’s claim.
“Not realistic but this is the level of confidence you need,” one user wrote.
“The odds of someone who doesn’t play the sport of football winning a national championship are way too close to the odds of Diego Pavia winning a national championship,” another user claimed.
“He is at the wrong school in the wrong conference. Did he see what Ohio State did to the Vols?” a user pointed out.
In Pavia’s third campaign of college football (first with the Commodores), in the 2024 season, his team finished with an overall record of 7-6 (3-5, SEC).
It won the Birmingham Bowl over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets by eight points, 35-27. Only time can tell whether Pavia will have the last laugh over his doubters.
